Xavier's does not appear to write to A'ida or at least his letters are not discovered. They were lovers but not married so A'ida was not allowed to visit Xavier she can only rely on her letters to communicate with him. The letters were written to Xavier whilst he was serving two life sentences. Both A'ida and Xavier were once political activists. Berger begins his novel with what could be described as a preface in which he tells us that he discovered the letters from A'ida to Xavier in an old abandoned prison. It's a novel that is made up of letters and some brief notes. To say the least John Berger's novel From A to X is an intriguing one.
